Hazeldean Stud
Hazeldean Merinos is a standout name in Merino sheep breeding, combining precision with
Excellence in Breeding
For over a century, Hazeldean has been at the forefront of Merino sheep breeding. Founded in 1865 by James Litchfield, the stud has grown into one of Australia’s largest and most progressive Merino flocks. With a total flock size of over 20,000 sheep, Hazeldean boasts one of the country’s largest gene pools, allowing for intense selection pressure and superior genetic improvements.
Hazeldean Merinos are renowned for their ability to consistently deliver high fleece value. They are among only three Australian studs capable of breaking the traditional trade-off between high fleece weight and low fibre diameter. This achievement has been validated through extensive independent analysis, setting Hazeldean apart in the industry.
Rigorous Selection Process
The journey of a Hazeldean ram begins at lamb marking, where lambs are genomically tested. They are then body weighed and assessed at weaning, with further evaluations at 10 months of age, including visual classing, body weighing, scanning, and fleece testing. After shearing, rams are re-assessed with detailed performance data and pedigree information.
Hazeldean’s elite rams are auctioned their Spring Ram Sale in October. This auction features the most accurately tested and highest performing rams, providing a unique opportunity for woolgrowers to access industry-leading genetics.
A Legacy of Innovation
Hazeldean’s dedication to performance recording dates back to 1954 when James Francis Litchfield began measuring fleeces and selecting animals based on wool production and fineness. This pioneering approach continues today, with Hazeldean leading the industry in performance recording and genetic improvement.
With a history of using Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) and ongoing participation in sire evaluations and benchmarking trials, Hazeldean Merinos consistently rank at the top. They are accredited free of Brucellosis and monitored negative stage 3 (MN3) for Ovine Johnes disease, ensuring the health and quality of their flock.
Hazeldean has donated a Ram voucher to the value of $2,000. This voucher can be used toward the purchase of a ram at the upcoming sale.
